Srinagar (NVI): A gunfight has started between terrorists and security forces in Parigam area of South Kashmir’s Pulwama district, police officials said.

An official said that a joint team of Police, Army and CRPF launched a cordon and search operation on specific information about the presence of militants in the area.

He said that as the joint teams of forces approached the suspected spot, the hiding militants fired upon them which was retaliated, triggering an encounter.

A senior police officer said the exchange of fire between forces and militants was going on.

As per the sources, two to three militants are believed to be trapped in the area.

As per the latest inputs, a joint operation was launched in the afternoon based on J&K police inputs. “Terrorists fired at the security forces when the cordon was being laid, turning it into an encounter. Firefight ensued. Joint operation in progress,” Srinagar based Chinar Corps said in a tweet.
