Fact check: Govt has not announced 15-day nationwide lockdown

New Delhi (NVI): A media report has claimed that the central government has announced a 15-day nationwide lockdown across the country, to contain the spread of COVID-19.

The news was shared on social media, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’ photo, claiming that the Centre has announced a lockdown of 15 days.

Debunking such claims, the Fact Check Unit of the Press Information Bureau (PIB) clarified that the news is fake and no such announcement has been made by the government.

“Claim: In a picture on social media, it is being claimed that the central government has announced a 15-day lockdown across the country.

#PIBFactCheck: This claim is #Farzi. The central government has not made any such announcement of imposing lockdown in the country,” PIB tweeted.

Earlier, a similar fake report claiming that lockdown will be re-imposed again in the country from December 1 to contain the spread of coronavirus went viral.

Amid the rising cases and the government’s decision to contain the COVID-19 spread in the country, a nationwide lockdown was imposed in India on March 25.

However, since June, Centre has been gradually opening up businesses in order to kickstart the economy with strict COVID-19 protocols for the citizens.

The PIB launched this fact-checking unit in December last year, to check such misinformation and viral fake news related to government’s policies and schemes that are circulating on social media platforms.
