Srinagar (NVI): An encounter is underway between security forces and militants in Heff-Khuri village of Zainapora area in South Kashmir’s Shopian district, police officials said.

They said that acting on a specific lead about the presence of militants in Heff-Khurri area, joint teams of Police, Army and CRPF laid a siege. “When forces zeroed in on a suspected spot, the hiding militants opened indiscriminate firing triggering a gunfight,” the officials said.

They said heavy volume of fire is being exchanged by the militants and forces. “We have installed lights in view of the dark and the operation may remain on a hold for the night. Cordon layers will be tightened to ensure militants don’t flee,” a police official present at the spot said.

Two to three militants are believed to be hiding in the area.
