Heavy rains likely over South, Central and N-W India: IMD

New Delhi: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) today predicted extremely heavy rainfall along with lightning and thunderstorms over several parts of South, Central and North-West India for the next few days.

According to IMD, “Intense wet spell likely to continue over Telangana, Vidarbha & adjoining areas of Coastal Andhra Pradesh and south Chhattisgarh on 10th & 11th July, 2022.”

“Fresh intense wet spell likely over Gujarat, Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra and coastal Karnataka from 12th July, 2022,” the IMD said in a statement.

Fairly widespread to widespread rainfall & isolated thunderstorm and lightning are very likely over Northwest India during the next 5 days, it said.

“A Low-Pressure area lies over coastal areas of south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh & neighbourhood with the associated cyclonic circulation extending up to upper tropospheric levels tilting southwestwards with height,” it said.

The monsoon trough is active and south of its normal position. An east-west shear zone runs roughly along 20°N in lower & mid-tropospheric levels tilting
southwestwards with height across North Peninsular India.

An off-shore trough at mean sea level runs from Gujarat coast to north Kerala coast, it said.

Under their influence, fairly widespread/widespread rainfall & thunderstorm/lightning with isolated heavy rainfall are very likely over Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Maharashtra, Gujarat state, Kerala & Mahe, Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam, Telangana and Karnataka during next 4-5 days, the IMD said.

Isolated very heavy rainfall very likely over Saurashtra & Kutch during 10th-12th; Marathawada on 11th & 12th; Coastal Karnataka on 14th; Kerala & Mahe on 10th, 13th & 14th; Konkan & Goa on 10th; Coastal Andhra Pradesh & Yanam on 12th & 13th; Interior Karnataka on 10th & 11th; West Madhya Pradesh on 11th & 12th; East Madhya Pradesh on 11th; Odisha during 12th-14th; Vidarbha on 13th and over Chhattisgarh on 12th & 13th July, 2022.

Isolated/Scattered heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy rainfall also likely over Telangana during 10th-12th; Gujarat Region, ghat areas of Madhya Maharashtra during 10th-14th; Saurashtra & Kutch on 13th & 14th; Konkan & Goa during 11th- 14th; Coastal Karnataka during 10th-13th, Chhattisgarh & Coastal Andhra Pradesh on 10th & 11th; Vidarbha during 10th – 12th July, 2022, the IMD said.

Isolated/scattered rainfall activity is very likely over Rayalaseema and Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal during the next 5 days with isolated heavy rainfall also likely over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry & Karaikal on 10th July, 2022.

It further predicted that isolated heavy rainfall very likely over Jammu & Kashmir on 10th & 11th; Himachal Pradesh during 10th- 13th and over Uttarakhand during 10th- 14th July, 2022.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall likely over Uttarakhand during 10th-12th July, 2022.

Scattered/fairly rainfall activity with isolated thunderstorm/lightning is very likely in Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Rajasthan and isolated/scattered over Uttar Pradesh during the next 5 days, the IMD said.

Isolated heavy rainfall likely over Punjab on 10th, 13th & 14th; Haryana-Chandigarh on 13th & 14th; West Rajasthan on 10th and over East Rajasthan from 11th-14th July, 2022.

Isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is also likely over Haryana-Chandigarh and East Rajasthan on 10th July, 2022.
