IAF chopper carrying CDS Gen Bipin Rawat crashes in TN

New Delhi: Indian Air Force Mi-17V5 helicopter carrying fourteen people including Chief of Defence Staff General Bipin Rawat and his wife crashed in Tamil Nadu’s Coonoor today.

Four people have been rescued and shifted to a nearby hospital. Two bodies were also recovered from the crash site, according to media reports.

An inquiry has been ordered into the matter.

Taking to Twitter, the Indian Air Force said, “An IAF Mi-17V5 helicopter, with CDS Gen Bipin Rawat on board, met with an accident today near Coonoor, Tamil Nadu. An Inquiry has been ordered to ascertain the cause of the accident.”

Reportedly, CDS General Bipin Rawat was to give a lecture at around 2:45 pm in Wellington today.

He along with his family and staff members were on board this helicopter when it met with an accident in Coonoor area in Tamil Nadu.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has briefed Prime Minister Narendra Modi about the situation.
