Srinagar, Aug 08 (NVI):- Political leaders from Jammu and Kashmir unanimously demanded immediate assembly elections during a meeting with the visiting Election Commission team in Srinagar.
The team, led by Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar, included election commissioners Gyanesh Kumar and S S Sandhu, met representatives from various registered political parties including the National Conference (NC), People’s Democratic Party (PDP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Congress, and Jammu and Kashmir Panthers Party (JKPP) at the Sher-i-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC).
The political leaders stressed the importance of restoring democracy in the Union Territory by holding timely elections.
The Supreme Court had previously directed the central government to complete the election process by September 30, though the schedule had yet to be announced by the EC.
BJP spokesperson R S Pathania said that the elections should occur within the Supreme Court’s deadline.
NC’s Nasir Aslam Wani highlighted the lack of a government since 2018 and the need for elections to address political, developmental, and security issues.
Congress’s G N Monga called for flourishing democracy and discussed the security scenario, advocating equal security measures for all parties.
PDP’s Khurshid Alam questioned the delay in polls, citing improved conditions and past successful events, emphasizing the need to restore democracy.
The EC assured the parties of conducting elections and is scheduled to continue reviewing preparations, culminating in a press conference on August 10 in Jammu.(News Vibes of India)
