India assumes chair of Colombo Process, to help promote safe, legal migration

New Delhi, May 29: India has assumed the chair of the Colombo Process for 2024-26,  that will help in promoting safe, orderly and legal migration.

The Colombo Process is a Regional Consultative Process of migrant worker origin countries from South and Southeast Asia.

Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal, posted on X, that this is the first time that India has assumed the chair of the Colombo Process since its inception in 2003.
“Promoting safe, orderly and legal migration.

“India assumed the Chair of Colombo Process for 2024-26, for the first time since its inception.

“Colombo Process is a Regional Consultative Process of migrant worker origin countries from South and SE Asia. It serves as a forum for exchange of best practices on overseas employment,” he posted.

The Colombo Process has held several meetings, including the inaugural meeting in 2003 in Colombo, Sri Lanka, and subsequent meetings in Manila, Philippines, Bali, Indonesia, and Dhaka, Bangladesh.

It is a forum to facilitate dialogue and cooperation on issues of common interest and concern relating to labour mobility. The Colombo Process has 11 member states and eight observer countries.

The 11 Member States are: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, the Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam. The eight Observer States include Bahrain, Italy, Kuwait, Malaysia, Qatar, Republic of Korea, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates.
