India’s Covid-19 tally crosses 35-lakh mark with over 78k new cases

New Delhi (NVI): India witnessed a record single-day surge of 78,761 fresh cases of coronavirus in the past 24 hours, taking the overall tally to 35,42,733, as per Health Ministry data.

948 deaths were recorded since yesterday, taking the total number of Covid fatalities to 63,498.

The total number of active cases in the country is 7,65,302, and 27,13,934 people have been cured/discharged. India currently has a recovery rate of 76.74%.

India is the third-worst hit country by the pandemic after the United States and Brazil.

The record-high number of new cases comes a day after the Centre announced guidelines for Unlock 4.0, giving the nod to social, political and religious events as well as restarting metro services in a graded manner starting September 7.

Metro services were suspended since March 22 in wake of the coronavirus outbreak. The guidelines issued by MHA will come into effect from September 1 and will be in place till September 30.

Meanwhile, lockdown shall continue to be implemented strictly in the containment zones till September 30.
