India hands over 1 lakh additional doses of Covid vaccine to Maldives

New Delhi (NVI): External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar today handed over 1,00,000 additional doses of COVID vaccine to the Maldives.

The vaccination consignment was received by Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and Health Minister Ahmed Naseem.

The External Affairs minister took to twitter in this regard and wrote, “From the people of India to the people of Maldives. Handed over 100,000 additional doses of COVID vaccine to FM @abdulla_shahid and Health Minister @KerafaNaseem.”

Notably, earlier on January 20, India had dispatched a consignment of 1 lakh doses of COVID-19 vaccines to the Maldives. Bhutan and Maldives became the first two countries to receive COVID-19 vaccines sent by India in sync with its “neighbourhood first” policy.

S Jaishankar arrived in the island nation today on a two-day visit during which he will call on President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

He will also hold talks with several other political leaders in the country and review the entire gamut of bilateral ties.

Jaishankar is visiting Maldives on the first leg of his two-nation tour that will also take him to Mauritius.

He was received at Velana International Airport by his Maldivian counterpart Abdulla Shahid, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Ahmed Khaleel, Foreign Secretary Abdul Gafoor Mohamed and Maldivian High Commissioner to India Hussain Niyaz.

During his visit, he will inaugurate some projects undertaken with Indian grant assistance and witness the exchange of several agreements and MoUs between the two countries, Maldivian Foreign Ministry stated.

It is his second official visit to the Maldives, following his visit to attend the 5th Indian Ocean Conference in 2019.
