New Delhi (NVI): As India witnessed a record single-day surge of 90,632 today, it overtook Brazil as the second most-affected country in the world after the United States.
India now has a total of 41,23,811 cases, more than Brazil which has 40,57,753 confirmed cases so far, according to WHO Covid-19 data.
The death toll due to the virus in India has reached 70,626, with 1,065 more number of deaths in the past 24 hours. However, Brazil’s death toll is higher than India, at 1,22,833, with 907 deaths reported since yesterday.
There are 8,62,320 active cases in the country now while 31,80,865 have been discharged so far. India’s recovery rate now stands at 77.3 per cent.
As per the latest Health Ministry data, there are 77.32 per cent cured/discharged/migrated patients of the total caseload. There are 20.96 per cent active cases and 1.72 per cent deaths of the total number of confirmed cases so far.
India reached the 2-million mark on August 7 and it took the country 16 more days to record another 1 million cases taking the cumulative to 3 million. After that, it took just 12 days for the tally to breach the 4-million mark.
The United States is the worst affected country so far with 6.2 million infections and 1.8 million deaths, according to John Hopkins University.
Meanwhile, 26.6 million Covid cases have been recorded globally so far, with the overall tally reaching 2,66,22,706. There have been 8,74,708 deaths due to corona worldwide while 1,77,17, 911 recoveries so far. Cases per 1 million people stand at 3,424.
