India records 1,26,789 new Covid cases, highest so far

New Delhi (NVI): India has recorded 1,26,789 new coronavirus cases in the last 24 hours, the biggest-ever daily surge the country has witnessed do far. 685 fresh deaths due to the deadly virus have also been recorded since yesterday.

With this, the country’s overall caseload now stands at 1,29,28,574. The active cases now stand at 8,43,473 while 1,18,51,393 Covid patients have recovered. The overall death toll now stands at 1,66,892.

Yesterday, India had recorded 1,15,736 new coronavirus infections and 630 related deaths.

Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh continue to witness a large number of daily cases. Maharashtra has recorded a new high of 59,907 cases, while in Chhattisgarh, the daily cases surged past 10-000-mark for the first time. The two states have been reporting an alarming surge in daily cases, besides Punjab.

The massive and record single-day spike in cases comes on a day when Prime Minister Narendra Modi will take stock of Covid situation at a meeting with chief ministers of all states today.

PM Modi also received his second dose of Covid-19 vaccine at Delhi’s All India Institute Of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) hospital this morning. He had received his first dose of Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin on March 1.

Pertinent to mention here that India is witnessing the second wave of the pandemic at present.

Meanwhile, New Zealand has temporarily suspended entry of travelers from India, including its own citizens, amid the Covid-19 surge.
