India reports 16,738 new COVID-19 cases and 138 deaths

New Delhi (NVI): With 16,738 new coronavirus infections in the last 24 hours, India’s coronavirus cases tally reached 11,046,914, the Union Health Ministry confirmed today.

The daily rise in COVID infections in India was recorded above 15,000 after nearly a month.

The death count climbed to 1,56,705 with the novel coronavirus virus claiming 138 lives during this period, the data showed. The daily deaths were registered above 130 after a gap of 26 days.

The COVID-19 case fatality rate stood at 1.42 per cent.

Currently, more than 1.07 crore patients have been cured and recovered across the country and the total number of recoveries stand at 10,738,501. The recovery rate now stands at 97.21 per cent.

Meanwhile, there are 1,51,708 active cases of coronavirus infection in the country, which comprises 1.37 per cent of the total caseload, the data stated.

Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with 21,21,119 COVID-19 cases followed by Kerala with 10,45,009 and Karnataka with 9,49,183 positive cases.

The other worst hit states are Andhra Pradesh (8,89,503), Tamil Nadu (8,49,629), Delhi (6,38,373) and Uttar Pradesh (6,03,103).

Furthermore, as Maharashtra battles a surge in Covid, 190 cases have emerged from a single hostel in a school in Washim district. Those who tested positive are 186 students and four teachers. The school premises have been declared a containment zone.
