India reports 35,871 new COVID-19 cases, 172 deaths in last 24 hours

New Delhi (NVI): With 35,871 new coronavirus infections being reported in the last 24 hours, the highest-single day spike this year, the overall tally has climbed to 11,474,605, the Union Health Ministry confirmed today.

The death count climbed to 1,59,216 with the novel coronavirus virus claiming 172 lives during this period, the data showed.

Despite the increase of COVID-19 cases across states and union territories in the country, the coronavirus mortality rate remains below two percent.

Currently, more than 1.10 crore patients have been cured and recovered across the country and the total number of recoveries stands at 11,063,025, which translates to a national COVID-19 recovery rate of 96.86 percent.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 active caseload increased to 2,52,364 which now comprises 1.74 percent of the total infections.

Maharashtra reported 23,179 new cases, which is an increase of nearly 5,000 cases recorded on Tuesday when the state reported 17,864 new cases.

With this, Maharashtra remains the worst-affected state with 23,70,507 COVID-19 cases followed by Kerala with 10,96,392 and Karnataka with 9,63,614 positive cases.

The other worst hit states are Andhra Pradesh (8,92,522), Tamil Nadu (8,62,374), Delhi (6,45,025) and Uttar Pradesh (6,05,915).

Meanwhile, the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination has crossed 3.64 crores coverage, informed the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare on Wednesday.
