New Delhi (NVI): India has reported 62,714 fresh coronavirus cases in the past 24 hours, the country’s biggest single-day surge in Covid-19 cases since October last year, according to the Health Ministry’s data released this morning.
With this, the overall cases in the country now stand at over 1.19 crore. Maharashtra, which is the worst affected state, reported 35,726 of these cases while Chhattisgarh reported 3,162 cases, more than Punjab which has also seen a sudden spike in cases recently.
There are over 4,86,310 active cases in the country now while 1,13,23,762 Covid patients have been discharged. 6,02,69,782 people have been vaccinated across the country so far.
312 fresh deaths in the last 24 hours have taken the death toll due to 1,61,552.
Yesterday, India had recorded 62,258 new coronavirus cases, the highest single-day rise this year. Apart from that, 291 new COVID-19 fatalities were reported across the country yesterday.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra will impose night curfew across the state from today, besides several steps taken to combat the sudden spike in cases in the past few weeks.
The state has also banned all types of social gatherings from yesterday. Malls, restaurants and gardens will remain shut in Maharashtra from 8 pm to 7 am. However, home delivery of food at night has been exempted.
Yesterday, the Central Government held a high-level meeting and asked the States and UTs to focus on stringent containment and public health measures in the 46 high burden districts to break the chain of transmission of the novel coronavirus.
