New Delhi (NVI): India today asked China to desist from making “infructuous attempts” to raise issues pertaining to Indian Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir at the UN Security Council (UNSC) after its third attempt failed on Wednesday.
China, at the behest of Pakistan, raised the issue at an informal and closed meeting but most of other member nations refused to pay heed, saying it’s an internal matter of India, according to officials.
This is the third time that China raked up the issue since abolition of special status of Jammu and Kashmir granted under Article 370 on August 5 last year.
The issue was first raised in August last year and then in January this year, but like previous occasions, there was no resolution.
“We have noted that China initiated a discussion in the UN Security Council on issues pertaining to the Indian Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir,” External Affairs Ministry said in a statement here today.
“This was not the first time that China has sought to raise a subject that is solely an internal matter of India. As on such previous occasions, this attempt too met with little support from the international community. We firmly reject China’s interference in our internal affairs and urge it to draw proper conclusions from such infructuous attempts,” it added.
China had called for the discussion in the Security Council under any other business.
India’s Permanent Representative to the UN T S Tirumurti said Pakistan’s attempt to internationalise the Kashmir issue through the United Nations had once again failed.
“In today’s meeting of UN Security Council which was closed, informal, not recorded and without any outcome, almost all countries underlined that J&K was bilateral issue & did not deserve time and attention of Council,” Trirumurti tweeted.”
Earlier, China once again called India’s move in J&K “illegal and invalid”, drawing sharp retort from India which said Beijing has no locus standing on the internal matter of India.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Anurag Srivastava said, “We have noted the comments of the Chinese MFA spokesperson on the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir. The Chinese side has no locus standi whatsoever on this matter and is advised not to comment on the internal affairs of other nations.”
