India’s Covid cases surge to 1.18 lakh, death toll 3,583

New Delhi (NVI): The total number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 1,18,447, while the death toll rose to 3,583 from the pandemic, Union Health Ministry confirmed today.

In last 24 hours, 6,088 new COVID-19 infections were reported in the country, the highest single day spike, ministry said.

In Maharashtra, the coronavirus cases increased to 41,642.The state accounts for around 35 per cent of all coronavirus cases in India.

The southern state of Tamil Nadu remains on the second spot with 13,967 positive cases, followed by Gujarat with 12,905 cases so far.

Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of fatalities, 1,454, followed by 773 in Gujarat and 270 in Madhya Pradesh.

The COVID-19 cases in Delhi have climbed to 11,659, according to the Health Ministry data.

The other states with high number of cases are Rajasthan (6,227), Madhya Pradesh (5,981), and Uttar Pradesh (5,515).

The mortality rate of COVID-19 patients in India, however, has remained less than half of the global average of 6.65 percent, the ministry said.

So far, number of active cases stands at 66,330 and 48,534 people have been cured/discharged.

Meanwhile, the Indian Railways will reopen reservation counters at select stations and booking through common service centres and agents from today.
