India’s Covid-19 tally crosses 7.4 lakh, death toll at 20,642

New Delhi (NVI): India saw coronavirus tally jump by another 22,752 in the last 24 hours, raising the total number to 7,42,417, Union Health Ministry confirmed.

The total number of fatalities has now reached 20,642 after 482 people died in the last 24 hours, it said.

As many as 4,56,831 COVID-19 patients have been cured and discharged so far. With this the total recovery rate in the country now stands at 61.5 per cent.

India, however, recorded more than 1.57 lakh COVID-19 cases and 3,236 deaths from the virus in the first week of July alone.

Maharashtra, with, 2,17,121 positive cases remains the worst-hit state in the country, followed by Tamil Nadu with 1,18,594 cases and Delhi which has reported 1,028,31 cases.

The other states with high virus cases are Gujarat (37,550), Uttar Pradesh (29,968), West Bengal (23,837) and Rajasthan (21,404).

Maharashtra has also reported the highest number of fatalities at 9,250, followed by 1,977 in Gujarat and 1,636 in Tamil Nadu.

The death toll in the Delhi reached to 3,165, while 74,217 patients in national capital have recovered so far, the healthy ministry data shows.

Meanwhile, the Drug Controller General of India (DGCI) has raised concerns over black marketing and extortion of Remdesivir, an antiviral drug prescribed for treatment of suspected cases of COVID-19.
