India’s COVID tally crosses 18 lakh-mark; death toll tops 38,000

New Delhi (NVI): The number of coronavirus cases in India reached 18,03,695 after the country reported 52,972 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, Union Health Ministry said.

The country’s death toll stands at 38,135 with 771 new fatalities being reported during this period.

So far, 1,186,203 patients have recovered all over the country. With this, the recovery rate among COVID-19 patients has risen to 65.8 per cent.

In worst-affected Maharashtra the coronavirus tally reaches 4,41,228, followed by Tamil Nadu (251,738), Andhra Pradesh (1,58,764) and Delhi (137,677).

In terms of fatalities, Maharashtra tops the tally with 15,576 deaths, ministry said.

The other worst affected states are Karnataka (1,34,819), Uttar Pradesh (92,921), West Bengal (75,516) and Gujarat (63,562).

According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), the total number of COVID-19 samples tested up to August 2 is 2,02,02,858 including 3,81,027 samples tested yesterday.

Meanwhile, the Serum Institute of India has received approval from the Drugs Controller General of India (DCGI) to conduct Phase II and III clinical trials of the coronavirus vaccine developed at Oxford University.
