India’s Covid tally rises by 18,855 fresh cases, 163 deaths

New Delhi (NVI): India witnessed a spike of 18,855 fresh cases in the last 24 hours, taking the total number of coronavirus cases to 10,720,048, Union Health Ministry confirmed.

Deaths from the pandemic also rose by 163 and took the toll to 1,54,010.

Currently, the number of recovered cases in the country have crossed 10.39 million and stands at 10,394,352.

Meanwhile, active coronavirus cases in India have dropped further below and stands at 1,71,686 at a time when the country is undergoing the world’s biggest vaccination drive.

In worst-affected states, Maharashtra tops the list with 20,18,413 positive cases of coronavirus, followed by Karnataka with 9,37,933 cases and Andhra Pradesh with 8,87,466 cases.

In another development, with more than 2.5 million health workers vaccinated so far, 11 states have given the first jab to over 35 per cent of its healthcare workforce and another six have achieved about 20 per cent or less vaccine coverage, health ministry data showed.

India is the fastest in the world to reach one million vaccinations within the first six days — US took 10 days and Germany 20, the ministry added.
