India’s Covid tally rises by 72,330 fresh cases, 459 deaths

New Delhi (NVI): India recorded a massive surge with 72,330 new coronavirus infections being reported in the last 24 hours, the overall tally has climbed to 12,221,665, the Union Health Ministry confirmed today.

The death count climbed to 1,62,927 with the novel coronavirus virus claiming 459 lives during this period, the data showed.

Yesterday, India had recorded 53,480 new coronavirus cases. Apart from that, 354 new COVID-19 fatalities were reported across the country.

Currently, more than 1.14 crore patients have been cured and recovered across the country and the total number of recoveries stands at 11,474,683.

Meanwhile, the COVID-19 active caseload increased to 5,84,055 with an increase of 31,489 cases in the last 24 hours.

Of the 72,330 new infections, 39,544 were from Maharashtra. Chhattisgarh recorded its highest ever count, with 4,563 cases. Karnataka also reported over 4,000 cases.

The five most affected states by total cases are Maharashtra (2,812,980), Kerala (1,119,542), Karnataka (989,804), Andhra Pradesh (899,812), and Tamil Nadu (881,752).

The third phase of India’s Covid-19 vaccination drive begins today, with everyone above the age of 45 eligible for the shot. It will cover the population which is at the highest risk — 90 per cent of deaths related to the disease in India have been in the category of those above the age of 45.

The Centre has instructed states to ensure all districts with high caseloads achieve 100 per cent vaccination coverage in the next two weeks.
