India’s COVID tally surpasses 77 lakh-mark; death toll mounts to 1.16 lakh

New Delhi (NVI): India’s coronavirus tally crossed the 77 lakh-mark today and currently stands at 77,06,946 with a single-day rise of 55,839 fresh cases, Union Health Ministry confirmed.

The country’s death toll has reached to 1,16,653 with 702 fatalities reported during this period.

On Monday, India recorded less than 50,000 new infections of novel coronavirus cases for the first time in nearly three months and on Tuesday and Wednesday as well the country reported around 55,000 cases.

The continuous decline in the number of new cases has meant that, after two and half months, India has stopped reporting the highest number of cases in the world.

So far, 68,74,518 patients have been cured and recovered all over the country while active cases stands at 7,15,812. With this, the recovery rate further improves to 89.2 per cent.

In worst-affected Maharashtra, the COVID-19 cases climbed to 16,17,658, followed by Andhra Pradesh with 7,93,299 cases, and Karnataka with 7,82,773 positive cases.

Other states with a high virus hit included Tamil Nadu (6,97,116), Uttar Pradesh (4,61,475) and Delhi (3,40,436).

Meanwhile, of the total deaths, Maharashtra tops the tally with 42,633 fatalities, followed by Tamil Nadu with 10,780 deaths.

The death toll in the national capital surpassed to 6,128, while 3,10,191 patients have been cured and recovered so far, the healthy ministry data shows.

According to Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), a total 9,86,70,363 samples tested for COVID-19 up to October 20. Of these, 14,69,984 samples were tested yesterday.
