Jammu: The Army and Jammu and Kashmir Police are hunting for at least one terrorist whose accomplice was gunned down in a fierce encounter yesterday in a village in Reasi district of Jammu province.
A terrorist, described as a “hardcore” one by the Army, was killed in Kalaban village during a gunfight yesterday.
An Army Jawan and a policeman were injured in the gun-battle with the terrorists in a hilly area.
The encounter erupted after the police got a tip-off about presence of two terrorists in the area, officials said.
“Dynamic CT (counter-terrorism) grid was established with extensive deployment in the area of responsibility,” said Jammu-based Defence Ministry PRO Lt Col Suneel Bartwal.
The terrorists trapped inside a cordoned house opened fired on the security personnel deployed outside, he said.
In the ensuing heavy firefight, one terrorist was neutralized.
“A detailed search of the house and the surrounding areas after the encounter resulted in the recovery of one terrorist body along with other War like stores to include one AK series assault rifle with magazines,” he said.
“Search Operation is in progress,” Col Bartwal said, apparently referring to the other terrorist who possibly managed to sneak out of the cordon.
“The presence of these heavily-armed terrorists in the hinterland indicates sustained attempts by inimical forces to destabilise the SPPR (South Pir Panjal Region),” he said, referring to the Jammu Province.
It may be recalled that a day earlier, an IED was detected and destroyed in the same district before it could cause any harm.
“A major incident has been averted in the region by these two consecutive actions by security forces,” Col Bartwal said.
