JeM associate held at Delhi airport after deportation from Qatar

New Delhi (NVI): A Jaish-e-Mohammad associate, who is accused in a militancy-related case in Kashmir’s Kulgam, was arrested by J&K police at Delhi IGI airport today after his deportation from Qatar.

The arrested JeM associate has been identified as Muneeb Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Kanelwan from Bijbehara area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.

Police officials said that Sofi was deported from Qatar and was wanted in a militancy-related case in southern district of Kulgam.

Kulgam police officials arrested Sofi as soon as he deboarded the plane, they said.

A police official said that Sofi will be brought to Kulgam for investigation. He said that Sofi is involved in providing money to Jaish-e-Muhammad. He used to get that money from some other militant associates, who used to collect it from different districts of Kashmir.

The official said that the role of Jaish associate Muneeb Sofi surfaced during the investigation of a militancy-related case. While in Qatar, Sofi was in touch with Pakistan based active Jaish militant Waleed Bhai for the purchase of arms and ammunition.

“An accused arrested in the said case disclosed that he along with other militant associates were collecting money for JeM from various districts in Kashmir and were handing over the collected amount to Muneeb Ahmad Sofi who was in Qatar. Sofi and was in contact with Pakistan based active Jaish militant Waleed Bhai for purchase of arms and ammunition from Pakistan,” he said.

The official said a lookout notice was issued against Muneeb and a non-bailable warrant under Section 25 of the Police Act was obtained from the concerned court.

“Consequent to the deportation of the accused from Qatar to India, he was apprehended at IGI Airport and is being brought to Kulgam for further questioning and investigation,” the police official added.
