Jammu: A Captain of the Indian Army and a terrorist, suspected to be a Pakistani national, have been killed in an intense gunfight which started last night in a forest area of Doda district of Jammu.
The gunfight in the Akar forest near the picturesque Patnitop began when the security forces, during a search operation, encountered a group of terrorists.
The operation, which has been ongoing was launched following specific intelligence inputs about the presence of a group of heavily armed terrorists in the region.
“Based on specific intelligence inputs, a joint operation by the #IndianArmy and #JKP was launched in Akar Forest near Patnitop. Contact has been established with the terrorists and operations are in progress,” said a post by the Army on X at 9.17 pm yesterday.
During the exchange of fire, Captain Deepak Singh suffered injuries and succumbed to these later, the Army said.
A courageous officer, Captain Singh was leading a search party in the dense forests of Assar in a mountainous region of Doda district when they came under heavy fire from the hiding terrorists.
Despite being injured, Captain Deepak continued to lead his team, exemplifying the bravery and commitment of the Indian Army.
He was immediately evacuated to a military hospital but unfortunately, he could not be saved, the Army said.
During the intense gunfight, a terrorist was also neutralised this afternoon, the Army said.
A significant cache of arms and ammunition, including an M4 assault rifle and an AK-rifle, has been recovered from the operation sight so far, along with four rucksacks.
The operation is still continuing.
