J&K Assembly Elections : Jailed Cleric Sarjan Barkati’s Nomination Form rejected

Srinagar, Aug 28 (NVI): The jailed cleric Sarjan Barkati, who had filed his nomination form to contest from Zainapora Assembly segment in Shopian district was rejected today along with 25 other nomination forms. Barkati’s daughter had filed nomination on behalf of her father who is languishing in jail.

Official sources said that 280 candidates had filed nomination papers in J&K for the first phase of elections in J&K of which 126 have been accepted so far and 26 rejected.

They said that among 26 rejected forms include one that of Sarjan Ahmed Wagay aka Barkati of Reban, Shopian. Barkati and his wife are serving detention in connection their alleged involvement in terror funding case.

Social activist Adil Nazir, who was accompanying Sugra, Barkati’s daughter, for filing nomination papers, said the nomination papers of Barkati have been rejected.                “We will challenge it in the court,” said Barkati’s daughter, Sugra.

J&K is going to witness Assembly elections after a decade in three phases from September 18. Last Assembly polls were held in 2014. (News Vibes of India)
