Srinagar (NVI): The Jammu and Kashmir administration today revoked the detention of former chief minister and National Conference leader Farooq Abdullah.
Abdullah has been in detention for over seven months. He was earlier detained under the J&K Public Safety Act (PSA) after the Centre abrogated Article 370 and ended the special status granted to Jammu and Kashmir.
“In exercise of powers conferred under Section 19(1) of the Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act, 1978, the government hereby revokes the detention order bearing No. DMS/PSA/120/2019 issued by District Magistrate, Srinagar, extended for a period of 23 months vide Government Order No Home/PB-V/340 of 2019 dated 13-12-2019 and then extended for a further period of three months vide Government order No Home/PB-V/668 of 2020 dated 11-03-2020 of Farooq Abdullah with immediate effect,” reads the order issued by Shaleen Kabra, Principal Secretary to the J&K government.
In September 2019 the NC president was kept at his Gupkar residence in Srinagar that was declared a sub-jail. His son and former J&K CM Omar Abdullah and PDP president Mehbooba Mufti were also put under detention after the revocation of Article 370 in August last year.
