Srinagar, Dec 30 (NVI) : Jammu and Kashmir will forgo New Year celebrations this year in observance of the seven-day national mourning declared by the Union Government following the death of former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

Official sources confirmed that no department in the region will hold New Year festivities during this mourning period.

The tourism department, however, has planned to begin its winter carnival events on January 2, 2024, in Pahalgam. “In mid-January, we will celebrate the Gulmarg Winter Carnival, and National Tourism Day will also be observed in Srinagar. Additional events are planned in Sonamarg, Doothapthri, Lolab, and other scenic locations,” sources said.

Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister and a prominent Congress leader, passed away at the age of 92 last week at Delhi’s AIIMS due to age-related health complications. Following his death, the Union Government declared a seven-day mourning period, during which national flags are flown at half-mast, and official events are postponed.

While New Year celebrations are on hold, Jammu and Kashmir’s tourism department will resume activities once the mourning period concludes, with a focus on showcasing the region’s winter attractions.(News Vibes of India)
