Srinagar, Jan 16 (NVI) Kashmir Valley was blanketed by fresh snowfall today, with significant snow accumulation in higher reaches and light snowfall in the plains.

Popular tourist destinations such as Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and areas along the Zojila axis saw substantial snowfall early this morning.

The plains of Anantnag, Kulgam, Shopian, Pulwama, and Baramulla also received light snow, while Srinagar saw light snowflakes as the day progressed.

The Meteorological Department has predicted generally cloudy weather with scattered light rain or snow throughout the day, with a possibility of isolated snow in higher reaches during the weekend. Forecasts for January 20-23 predict light to moderate snow across various areas, particularly on January 22-23, which could see fairly widespread snowfall.

Owing to overcast skies, minimum temperatures across the region saw a slight rise. Srinagar’s minimum temperature reached minus 2.5°C, up from minus 4.8°C the previous night. Gulmarg, known for its skiing slopes, recorded minus 7°C, while Pahalgam saw a more moderate minus 4.2°C, up from minus 8.4°C.

Kashmir is currently enduring “Chillai-Kalan,” the harshest 40-day winter period, which is marked by the highest chances of snowfall and the coldest temperatures of the year. This period will end on January 30, after which the region will transition into “Chillai-Khurd” (Medium cold) and “Chillai-Bachha” (Mild cold) phases.

Residents and tourists are being advised to stay updated on weather conditions as the valley braces for another round of heavy snowfall in the coming days.(News Vibes of India)
