Srinagar, Jan 4 (NVI): In a decisive action against the growing menace of drug trafficking, Jammu and Kashmir Police today arrested six drug peddlers in multiple operations across the Kashmir valley.
Police said The operations were conducted in Srinagar, Sopore, Awantipora, and Baramulla, led to the recovery of significant quantities of contraband substances, including heroin and charas, aimed at disrupting the drug network in the region.
In Srinagar, a police team from Shalteng Police Station apprehended Mohammad Yaseen Bhat, alias Shaka, during a surprise checkpoint at Lawaypora-Mujgund Axis. Approximately 22 grams of heroin-like substance were recovered from his possession. Similarly, in the Zadibal area, another individual, Waseem Ahmad Bafanda from Dangerpora Malbagh, was found carrying 4 grams of heroin and cash amounting to Rs 3,020.
In Sopore, the police intercepted Owais Bashir Shakari of Sher-Colony at Adipora crossing. A search revealed 5.10 grams of a brown sugar-like substance in his possession. Meanwhile, in Awantipora, Aqib Qadir Sofi from Gang Tral was apprehended with 1 kg of charas powder during a checkpoint operation by the Tral Police.
In Baramulla, a dual arrest and seizure operation was conducted. Rafiq Ahmad Sheikh of Hundi Nowshera was caught with 50 grams of charas-like substance at Bela Crossing Boniyar. Upon further investigation, a search of the residence of Shameema Begum in Lari Kasi Boniyar led to the recovery of 62 grams of charas-like substance and 1 kg of charas powder. This suggests a larger network at play, with further investigations underway.
The police have registered cases under relevant sections of law, and all suspects remain in custody. Authorities are urging citizens to report any suspicious activities related to drug peddling by contacting local police stations or dialing 112. Police reiterated their commitment to eradicating the drug menace, emphasizing a zero-tolerance policy toward such illegal activities.
