Kashmir: Protest over water scarcity turns violent in Baramulla locality, police calls for restraint

Srinagar, July 19 (NVI):- Complaining about water scarcity in their area, people in Mirgund area of Baramulla district in Kashmir today came out on the streets and indulged in a violent protest, in which a few security personnel of a local BJP leader were injured.

The protest was organised over water scarcity in the area with shortages lasting weeks, the locals complained.

The agitation turned violent with the protesters throwing stones and bottles at the police which used tear gas and water cannons to disperse them.

Several injuries were reported on both sides.

The Personal Security Officers (PSOs) of BJP’s Media Incharge in Kashmir Adv Sajid Yousuf Shah and Social Media Incharge Er. Sahil Bashir Bhat suffered injuries when their convoy came under attack during the protest, officials said.

Later, Baramulla SSP Amod Nagpure acknowledged that the grievances of the public were genuine and urged citizens to register their protests peacefully, emphasizing that there is no space for violence in the district.

The SSP said the government had initiated steps to address the water problem of the people in Mirgund.

He highlighted the importance of maintaining law and order and the role of the public in achieving this.

He said that there is space for peaceful protest in democracy but no space for violence and such things should be avoided.

Nagpure called on community leaders and residents to engage in dialogue and use democratic means to express their grievances.

The SSP assured that the police are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all citizens and will take strict action against any individuals or groups attempting to incite violence.
