New Delhi, Oct 21 (NVI): The Defence Ministry on Wednesday signed a Rs 770-crore contract with State-owned Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the procurement of Improved Low Level Light Weight Radars (LLLR-I) for the Indian Army.

The contract was signed in the presence of Defence Secretary Rajesh Kumar Singh in New Delhi.

The radar system is capable of detecting and tracking fighter-sized targets as well as mini and micro drones. It also has the capability to prioritise aerial targets, enhancing the Army’s ability to counter threats posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS), the ministry said.

The procurement is aimed at strengthening India’s air defence capabilities and promoting indigenous defence manufacturing.

The ministry said the contract aligns with the government’s vision of Viksit Bharat @2047 and will support the domestic defence manufacturing ecosystem, including micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

The initiative is also expected to contribute to building a resilient, self-reliant and globally competitive defence industry.—(NVI)
