New Delhi (NVI): The Maharashtra government today approved Aaditya Thackeray’s Mumbai nightlife project that proposes malls, eateries and pubs in the city to remain open round the clock from January 27.
The idea ‘Mumbai 24 hours’ was approved by the Maharashtra cabinet today after hours-long discussions. However, this has not been made compulsory for the places and the malls and other places that wish to remain open all 24 hours are free to do so.
Maharashtra Tourism Minister Aaditya Thackeray had raised the matter last week and said that establishments in non-residential areas in the city will have the option to remain open 24×7, although it will not be made mandatory.
His proposal came while drawing a parallel with the international metro cities. He also said that he doesn’t want Mumbai to lag behind in providing 24×7 facilities to people. He further said that the nightlife project will boost employment in the city and enhance the economy and also assured that law and order in the city won’t be affected.
Noting that London’s ‘night economy’ was five billion pounds Thackeray said after the cabinet meeting that the government’s decision could help generate more revenue and jobs, in addition to the existing 5 lakh people working in the service sector.
He also said that while taking the decision, excise rules have not been touched and pubs and bars will close as usual at 1.30 am.
