New Delhi (NVI): National Education Day is observed every year on November 11, to commemorate the birth anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, the first Education Minister of Independent India.

Maulana Azad, a reformer and a freedom fighter, was not merely a scholar but committed to building the nation through education. He served as the Education Minister of Independent India from August 15, 1947, until February 2, 1958.

The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), with a resolution on September 11, 2008, declared November 11 as National Education Day.

National Education Day is a tribute to all the great contributions made by Maulana Abdul Azad in the field of the education sector in India.

The day is also celebrated to reinforce the country’s educational institutions and increase the quality and performance of education to a great extent.

On this day, various programs and campaigns are organized by institutions to spread awareness about education and make every person literate. But this year the celebrations are muted because of the pandemic.

Maulana Azad played a major role in the establishment of the University Grants Commission (UGC). He was also responsible for establishing the first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) in the country.
