New Delhi (NVI): A UK court has ordered the extradition of jailed diamond merchant Nirav Modi, after a nearly two-year-long legal battle to face charges of fraud and money laundering.
“I am satisfied that Nirav Modi’s extradition to India is in compliance per human rights,” District Judge Samuel Goozee said, adding that he had the right to appeal the order.
“There is no evidence that if extradited Nirav Modi will not get justice,” the judge said, agreeing with the submissions of the Indian government.
“The government of India has provided comprehensive assurance regarding keeping Nirav Modi in Barrack number 12 in Arthur Road prison. There is sufficient security, adequate food and Barrack 12 has more space than where he is lodged right now,” the court said.
Furthermore, the judge also junked his contention about poor mental health and poor medical conditions in India.
Jeweller Modi is accused for fraud and money laundering in the Rs 14,000-crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) scam.
He left India in the first week of January 2018, weeks before the scam was revealed.
He was arrested on an extradition warrant on March 19, 2019, following which he has appeared from Wandsworth Prison for several court hearings in the case.
