New Delhi (NVI): The Ministry of Road and Transport has issued draft notification that would make government vehicles ineligible for registration renewal after 15 years.

The new rules are likely to come into effect from April 1, 2022.

According to the draft notification, the rules will apply to all such old vehicles owned by Central and state government departments, local governments including municipalities and panchayats

Also, state transport undertakings, PSUs and other autonomous bodies under the Central and state governments.

This move is set to pave the way for scrapping government vehicles older than 15 years.

However, the ministry has issued draft rules for public consultation and will seek suggestions from stakeholders for thirty days before notifying them.

Earlier, the government had also proposed a scrapping policy for government vehicles older than 15 years.
