Srinagar: Pakistan-supported terrorists shot dead this evening a Sarpanch in Kashmir, in second such killing in a week that indicates targeting of elected leaders of local village bodies.
Sameer Ahmad Bhat was shot by the unidentified terrorists at his residence in Khonmoh area on the outskirts of Srinagar at around 6.45 PM, police said.
He was rushed to a hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the police said.
“Preliminary investigation has revealed that terrorists barged into the house of a Sarpanch and fired indiscriminately upon him. In this terror incident, he sustained critical gunshot injuries and was immediately shifted to nearby hospital for the treatment where he succumbed to his injuries,” a police statement said.
Soon after the incident, the area was cordoned off and a search was launched to track down the killer terrorists.
In a week, this is the second killing by terrorists of a leader of an elected village body in Kashmir.
Earlier on March 2, terrorists had gunned down Panch Mohammad Yaqoob Dar in south Kashmir’s Kulgam district.
The killing of Sarpanch today took place hours after an IED blast killed one and wounded 13 in Udhampur district of J&K.
