New Delhi, July 5: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday congratulated Labour Party leader and new UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on his party’s landslide victory in the UK parliamentary elections and said he looks forward to the positive and constructive bilateral relations to further strengthen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.
In a post on X, PM Modi also thanked ex-PM Rishi Sunak for his active contribution to deepen the bilateral ties between India and the UK during his term in office.
Keir Starmer took over as Britain’s prime minister after his Labour Party clocked a landslide majority on Friday in the parliamentary elections and dealt a bruising defeat for incumbent premier Rishi Sunak’s Conservative Party.
PM Modi said:
“Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to @Keir_Starmer on the remarkable victory in the UK general elections. I look forward to our positive and constructive collaboration to further strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in all areas, fostering mutual growth and prosperity.”
For Sunak, he posted:
“Thank you @RishiSunak for your admirable leadership of the UK, and your active contribution to deepen the ties between India and the UK during your term in office. Best wishes to you and your family for the future.”
Keir Starmer, human rights barrister, was elected Britain’s new Prime Minister on Friday.
Meanwhile, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Friday congratulated David Lammy on being appointed as UK’s Foreign Secretary and said he looks forward to continuing the bilateral engagement and strengthening ties.
In a post on X, the EAM said:
“Congratulations to @DavidLammy on being appointed Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom.
“Look forward to continuing our engagement and strengthen the India-Great Britain Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.”
New UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has appointed David Lammy as Foreign Secretary after the Labour Party swept to power in a landslide general election win.
Lammy, 51, a trailblazing black lawmaker, replaces the Conservatives’ David Cameron as Britain’s top diplomat.
Lammy has been Labour’s international affairs spokesman for over two years.
Lammy had previously campaigned unsuccessfully for the UK to stay in the EU and sought a second referendum to overturn the Brexit vote.
