New Delhi (NVI): As the second phase of COVID-19 vaccination begins in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi this morning took his first vaccine shot at AIIMS Delhi.
PM Modi took a dose of the home-grown Covaxin developed by Bharat Biotech and the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR).
He tackled vaccine hesitancy and wrote in a tweet, “Took my first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine at AIIMS. Remarkable how our doctors and scientists have worked in quick time to strengthen the global fight against COVID-19.”
“I appeal to all those who are eligible to take the vaccine. Together, let us make India COVID-19 free!” he added in his tweet.

The second phase of the world’s largest coronavirus vaccination drive for the age-appropriate population groups, to cover people over 60 years of age and those above 45 with co-morbidities, will start from today in the nation.
All vaccines provided to beneficiaries at the government health facilities will be entirely free of cost, while private facilities will charge a sum of ₹250 per person per dose.
Apart from Covaxin, Pune-based Serum Institute’s Covishield, developed in patnership with Oxford University and pharma giant AstraZeneca, is being used in the vaccination drive which began on January 16.
