Moscow: Prisoners lodged in a jail in Russia’s Volgograd region today seized control of the entire premises, killing officials and taking several hostages.
The situation was brought under control within hours as the Russian special forces killed 4 inmates and freed the hostages, according to a statement issued by the Russian National Guard.
“Snipers from the Russian National Guard special units based in the Volgograd region fired for precise shots to neutralise 4 inmates, who took some of the colony’s staff hostage,” it said.
Earlier, during a session of a disciplinary commission, convicts took staff of the penal institution as hostages.
“There are casualties,” said a government statement but did not specify the number.
Videos appearing on social media showed 4 prison officials lying on the floor, some in pools of blood, with hostage-takers shouting that they are ISIS ‘mujahideen’.
According to Russian investigators, “several prisoners” were involved in the attack within IK-19 prison colony, located in the town of Surovikino, about 850km south of the capital, Moscow.
