Srinagar, Jan 17(NVI): A 60-year-old woman from Budhal village in Rajouri district passed away at GMC Rajouri early today morning, marking the 16th fatality linked to a mysterious illness that has been plaguing the area for over 45 days.
Among the deceased are 12 children, further intensifying concerns in the region.
The latest victim, identified as Jatti Begum, wife of Mohammad Yousuf, was admitted to the hospital on Thursday but succumbed during treatment. Her death follows that of her husband, Mohammad Yousuf, who also fell victim to the same illness earlier this week. The couple were relatives of Mohammad Aslam, a local villager who lost five of his children to the illness, highlighting the devastating impact on some families in particular.
The deaths have left the community in shock and fear, with residents demanding swift action and clear answers. J&K Health Minister Sakina Itoo has ruled out the possibility of a viral outbreak or infectious disease, fueling speculation about alternative causes such as environmental contamination, toxic exposure, or other undiagnosed factors.
To uncover the mystery, the police have constituted an 11-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the deaths. Meanwhile, health officials are conducting medical tests and surveys in the affected areas to determine any common links among the victims, such as water, food sources, or environmental hazards.
The mysterious illness first emerged in Budhal village nearly two months ago, with children being the most severely affected. Symptoms, though not officially detailed by authorities, reportedly include fever, vomiting, and severe weakness. Despite several deaths, no definitive diagnosis has been announced, leaving families and villagers in limbo.
Budhal, a remote village with limited healthcare facilities, has seen a surge in hospital visits as residents fear the illness may spread further. However, no cases have been reported outside the immediate area, which has led to speculation about localized causes such as contaminated water supplies, improper waste disposal, or exposure to toxic materials.
The deaths of multiple members within single families have particularly alarmed locals. Mohammad Aslam, who lost five children, now fears for the safety of the remaining members of his family, while others in the village struggle to cope with their mounting grief.
The government has assured the public of a thorough investigation, with the SIT working alongside medical and forensic experts to determine the root cause of the crisis. Health officials are also on the ground, assessing hygiene standards, water quality, and other potential factors contributing to the fatalities.
For the residents of Budhal, however, the mystery remains an ongoing nightmare. Families are pleading for urgent intervention and increased medical support to prevent further loss of life, while the rest of the district watches closely, hoping for answers and solutions to this deeply distressing situation.(News Vibes of India)
