Kulgam, Mar 28 (NVI): Residents of Ganiepora Kilam in South Kashmir’s Kulgam district on Saturday staged a protest against the Jal Shakti Department over an acute shortage of potable drinking water that has persisted for the past 20 days.

Locals said the area has been reeling under a severe water crisis, leaving several households without basic water supply. “Our taps have been dry for the last 20 days. We are facing immense hardship, and our children are suffering as they are not even getting water for bathing,” a protesting resident said.

The aggrieved residents assembled in Kilam and raised slogans against the department, demanding immediate restoration of water supply.

Meanwhile, when contacted, the Assistant Executive Engineer (AEE) Jal Shakti Qazigund said that efforts are underway to restore the water supply at the earliest. However, he clarified that the current restoration measures would not be a permanent solution.

“The pipeline needs to be realigned as around three kilometers of it falls under the main road. I have already submitted a memorandum under the SASCI scheme for its realignment. Once approved, the pipeline will be realigned accordingly,” he added.(NVI)
