Smart Meter Installation: KPDCL Says Buying Additional Cables Not Mandatory

Srinagar, Oct 21 (NVI): The Kashmir Power Distribution Corporation Limited (KPDCL) on Wednesday clarified that consumers cannot be compelled to purchase additional cables as a condition for the installation of smart electricity meters.

The clarification came after Jammu and Kashmir Peoples Conference president and Handwara MLA Sajad Lone alleged that consumers were being asked to pay between Rs 4,000 and Rs 5,000 for additional cables to get smart meters installed, imposing an extra financial burden on economically weaker households.

KPDCL said the smart metering project provides the necessary installation cables, including additional lengths wherever technically required.

The corporation clarified that while existing service lines remain the responsibility of consumers under applicable electricity regulations, the replacement or upgradation of service cables is optional and cannot be made mandatory for smart meter installation.

“No consumer should be compelled to purchase cables or incur unnecessary expenses for smart meter installation,” the corporation said.

KPDCL reiterated its commitment to ensuring the transparent, hassle-free and consumer-friendly implementation of the smart metering programme.

It also urged consumers to report any instance of being forced to purchase cables or incur unnecessary expenses to the concerned authorities for appropriate action.—(NVI)
