Srinagar, Dec 29 (NVI): Heavy snowfall has thrown life into disarray across Kashmir, triggering widespread disruptions in transportation and essential services.
The Valley is grappling with blocked roads, grounded flights, and damaged utility networks, leaving residents in a state of hardship.
The Srinagar-Jammu National Highway, the only road link connecting the Kashmir Valley to the rest of India, remains closed due to heavy snow accumulation and multiple landslides. over 1200 light and heavy vehicles are stranded on the highway.
An official said that efforts to clear the highway are underway, but treacherous conditions continue to pose a challenge. Essential supplies to the Valley have been affected, with stranded vehicles adding to the chaos.
Meanwhile, flight operations at Srinagar International Airport have been suspended indefinitely. Snow-covered runways and poor visibility have grounded all flights, leaving travelers stranded. Airport officials have advised passengers to check with airlines for updates.
The snowfall has wreaked havoc on the Valley’s power infrastructure, with damaged transmission lines plunging many areas into darkness. While authorities have managed partial restoration in some parts, large swathes of the region remain without electricity.
Water supply systems have also taken a hit, with freezing temperatures and blocked pipelines causing acute shortages. Residents in affected areas have been urged to use water sparingly until normal services are restored.
Emergency teams are working around the clock to restore services and clear roads. The meteorological department has forecast improved weather in the coming days, offering a glimmer of hope for the beleaguered residents.
