The encounter initially began late Sunday evening when joint teams of the Army, CRPF, and J&K Police launched a cordon-and-search operation based on intelligence about the presence of terrorists. During the search, a hideout was uncovered, and the terrorists opened fire, leading to a gunfight.

Operations were temporarily halted overnight due to poor visibility but resumed at daybreak. In the ensuing exchange of fire, a soldier sustained injuries and was evacuated for medical treatment.
