New Delhi: China is reportedly witnessing a big surge in fresh Covid cases leading to fears  in India and elsewhere about the possibility of a fresh wave of the deadly pandemic.

It was 3 years back, around this time of the year, that COVID-19 pandemic erupted in the Chinese city of Wuhan and spread to engulf the entire world, killing millions of people.

Over the last few months, negligible Covid cases, mostly non-fatal, have been reported, giving a sense of relief to everyone.

However, the latest reports from China have resurrected the fears of yet another wave of the pandemic, with predictions that lakhs of people could die in China because of the fresh outbreak.

While the Chinese government is downplaying the situation and reporting only a few thousand cases of infections along with a few fatalities, independent versions claim that tens of thousands of people in that country are getting afflicted every day.

The Chinese government had enforced strong lockdown in various parts of the country to curb the spread of the virus but the restrictions were eased earlier this month in the wake of mass protests by the people affected by the lack of work.

Some videos and versions by independent people from China, on social media, now claim that hospitals are over burdened because of the Covid patients and the crematoriums are recording a large number of casualties.

However, it was not possible to verify the authenticity of such videos and comments on social media.

US-based Institute of Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) has predicted that China could witness an explosion of Covid-19 cases and record the death of over a million people in 2023.

Experts opine that the surge will not remain limited to China and like in 2020, it will spread to other countries, ferried by travellers.
