Karachi: Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) tonight carried out a major attack at Karachi Police Headquarters, killing and injuring dozens of policemen.

A group of heavily-armed suicide attackers, in police uniform, stormed the high security complex through the main gate by throwing grenades and firing indiscriminately.

Some of the attackers entered through the back gate of the building which houses the office of Karachi Police Commissioner, police said.

Soon after the attack started, TTP spokesman claimed responsibility for it.

Intense firing, punctuated by huge blasts, took place at the complex for about 3 hours after which the government claimed that all the building had been cleared.

Government spokesman said there were 3 attackers and all were killed.

He claimed that only 3 policemen and a civilian were killed and 14 security personnel injured in the attack.

However, other sources said the number of casualties is much higher and the government was trying to play down the figure.
