Srinagar (NVI): Two army jawans were today killed after vehicle-borne terrorists opened fire at a security forces party in HMT area of Srinagar, police officials said. The militants fired at Army’s Road Opening Party (ROP) in the area.
According to a police officer, the two army troopers, who were initially injured in the gunfire, later succumbed at a hospital. “Both the soldiers were shifted to army hospital where they succumbed to the injuries,” he said.
Inspector General of Police, Kashmir, Vijay Kumar said that three militants travelling in a Maruti car carried out the attack. “Three militants were travelling in a Maruti car and two of them were carrying weapons and fired indiscriminately at the army.
This left two personnel seriously wounded, who later succumbed,” he said. The IGP said that security forces were chasing the Maruti car, adding that Jaish-e-Mohammad terror outfit may have carried out the attack.
“It appears that there is involvement of foreign militants. Details of the outfit would be divulged later,” he added.
Meanwhile, the whole area has been cordoned off and a search operation in underway.
The terror attack comes just two days ahead of the DDC elections in J&K and on a day when the country is observing the anniversary of the Mumbai 26/11 terror attacks.
