New Delhi (NVI): 26 dead bodies have been recovered in the glacier burst disaster that wreaked havoc in Chamoli district Uttarakhand yesterday, even as rescue operations were underway to find 171 people who are still missing in the massive flooding.

Uttarakhand DGP Ashok Kumar tweeted: “Till 8 pm of 8th February, 26 bodies have been recovered. 171 people still remain missing out of which around 35 are supposed to be in the Tunnel where rescue operation is still going on.”

Pertinent to mention here that at least 30 workers are trapped in a 250-metre tunnel at Tapovan in Chamoli district after the massive avalanche led to flash floods in Rishiganga river yesterday.

The glacial burst took place a few kilometres from Joshimath, along the Reni village and completely swept away four ‘jhoola pulls’ and the Rishiganga hydropower project in the village.
