2 more Indian soldiers killed in Poonch encounter; toll rises to 9

Jammu: Two more soldiers of the Indian Army have been killed in a fierce gunfight with terrorists at the Line of Control (LoC) in Poonch district of Jammu and Kashmir, raising to 9 the toll in the encounter which has been raging for the last 6 days.

The Army, in a statement, said Subedar Ajay Singh and Naik Harendra Singh were “killed in action during search operations being conducted by the Indian Army along with Jammu and Kashmir Police in densely-forested area of Nar Khas in Mendhar.

The Indian Army had launched a combing operation in Dera Ki Gali on October 11 after receiving inputs about the presence of terrorists there.

Five soldiers, including a junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) were killed, in the gun battle on that day.

During the intermittent but fierce gunfight, two more soldiers — Rifleman Yogambar Singh and Rifleman Vikram Singh Negi — were killed yesterday.

With the recovery of bodies of two more soldiers today, the Indian Army casualties have risen to 9, which is the highest in a single encounter in recent times in Jammu and Kashmir.
