New Delhi (NVI): A massive fire at the Eastern Railway headquarters in Kolkata has claimed at least seven lives on Monday evening.
The blaze broke out on the 13th floor of the 14-storied New Koilaghat building on Strand Road. At least 25 fire engines were deployed to put out the blaze that began on the 13th floor.
Firefighters, and railway and police officials are among those dead.
Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited the spot at night and confirmed the deaths.
The Centre has approved an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh each from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund for the next of kin of those who have lost their lives due to the tragic fire in Kolkata.
Meanwhile, Railway Minister Piyush Goyal has also expressed grief over the incident and ordered a high-level probe to ascertain the cause of the fire.
